ABOUT THE PUBLIC INTEREST LAW CENTER

The Public Interest Law Center is a nationally renowned public interest law firm with a mission using high-impact legal strategies to advance the civil, social, and economic rights of communities in the Philadelphia region facing discrimination, inequality, and poverty. We combine targeted litigation, legal advice, community education, advocacy, and organizing to secure people’s access to fundamental resources and services, including a high-quality education, health care, housing and community services, employment, a healthy neighborhood and the unencumbered right to vote.

STAFF ATTORNEY

The Public Interest Law Center is seeking applications for a staff attorney to work primarily in the areas of housing and environmental justice. Our work is aimed at stopping housing discrimination against low-income people, promoting healthy, affordable housing for people in the neighborhoods of their choice and supporting low-income, historically disinvested communities and communities of color in advocating effectively for sustainable and equitable neighborhoods.

The lawyer will work on the Public Interest Law Center’s major litigation initiatives in these subject areas and will be responsible for all aspects of such litigation including developing legal theories, factual investigation, research, discovery, trial, appeals and enforcement. The lawyer is expected to stay informed about the challenges facing the diverse communities in which we work and to identify high impact litigation solutions where appropriate.

The lawyer also will be responsible for developing and implementing a wide range of additional strategies to achieve clients’ goals. The attorney will be expected to assist community clients in negotiations over land use, provide policy and strategic guidance; and engage in advocacy, community organizing, community education and coalition building. The Staff Attorney will report to the Legal Director.

The candidate must have at least at least five years’ experience practicing law, and preference will be given to candidates with experience in environmental law.
